Bound in original cloth, with black spine label, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which is worn at edges with chips and tears, including head and tail of spine. Boards damp stained, but a clean interior. Small signature on front pastedown and library stamps on first free endpaper. Illustrated by folding map and by maps and tables in text. Analytical study of the Soviet Far East, Siberia and the central Asian republics, published by the Institute of Pacific Relations, a non-governmental organisation founded in 1925 and dissolved in 1960, its functions having been partly taken over by University research centres. William Mandel (1917-2016) was a journalist, author and left wing political activist who withstood interrogation by Senator McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953 and 1960.
