8vo. 5.75 x 7 inches. Unpaginated. [40 pp.]. Bound in brown embossed leather, gilt, elaborately decorated gilt, with brass reinforcements to board edges with clasp. The spine has been finely re-backed in leather, reusing the original spine lettering All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some light water stains on top margins, not affecting text. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout by texts with illuminated borders in colour, including frontispiece which incorporates a pasted-down photograph, and the title page and preliminaries. Handsomely bound and illuminated, by Samuel Stanesby, the text of The Sermon on the Mount. McLean notes that Stanesby produced a series of illuminated books (at least eleven) with a character of their own often with elaborate decorated bindings between 1857 and 1865.
