Newspaper cutting attached to first free endpaper. Illustrated by 2 folding maps, colour frontispiece and by 52 pages of black and white photographic plates. A systematic survey of survey of the religious life of Tibet, including Buddhism and the role of the monasteries, with a chapter on Christian missionaries in Lhasa. Sir Charles Bell (1878-1945) of the Indian Civil Service and writer on Tibetan language and culture, served as political officer in Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet and was a close friend of a former Dalai Lama.
