A little wear to extremities and traces of foxing; otherwise a very good copy. 1923 presentation inscription from author. Illustrated by frontispiece and by facsimile in text. A history of one of the principal offices of state from the accession of Queen Elizabeth in 1558 to 1680, the office being divided into north and south after 1660. The book was revised from the 1921 doctoral thesis of Florence Greir Evans (1896-1980). A very scarce title in the original edition.
