Notes

The five volume set produced by the Oxford University Press, is one of the best editions of the novels of Jane Austin ever issued. The inclusion of reproductions of the original title-pages to the first editions, together with the scholarly notes, appendices and indexes, and the carefully chosen contemporary illustrations complement the definitive text. A revised version of the 1923 Oxford edition edited by Robert William Chapman, scholar and editor (1881-1960), with unacknowledged assistance from his wife. Chapman became Secretary of the Clarendon Press and later edited the letters of Samuel Johnson. The combination of text and an attractive binding by John and Edward Bumpus of London, has resulted in a most desirable library set.
