Bound in original buff cloth, gilt, with black blocks on front board and spine. Top edge gilt. Some spotting of edges and flyleaves, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 19 plates, including frontispiece, the majority of which are black and white photographs. Decorated by chapter heading vignettes, by initials and by publisher's device on title page. A study of Hindu sects, especially of mystics and ascetics. John Campbell Oman (1841-1911), scholar of and writer on Indian religion, was Professor of Natural Science in the Government College, Lahore, 1877-97.
