Multi-volume editions of the works of Tobias Smollett began to appear after 1790 but the earliest one volume edition, published by Bohn with the nineteen illustrations by Cruikshank, did not appear until 1840. The editor, Thomas Roscoe (1791-1871), born in Liverpool, was an author and translator, who also edited the works of Fielding and Swift for Bohn.
