Item Description
FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. xiii + [iii] + 319 pp. Bound in original black cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece. The twelfth and final volume (since the first appeared in 1975) of the dairies of James Lees-Milne (1908-97), architectural historian and diarist. From 1936-73, he was Historic Buildings Advisor to the National Trust and facilitated the large scale transfer of country houses from private ownership to the Trust. He displays a 'mixture of candour, waspish wit, eloquent exasperation and human understanding,' in describing his activities and visits and in meeting a great variety of personalities, including Roy Jenkins, Edward Heath, Mick Jagger and the Prince of Wales.
