8vo. 6 x 8.75 inches. 380 pp. Bound in original orange cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has sunned spine and chips at head and tail. Top edge red. Traces of fore edge foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 20 pages of plates, including four in colour with frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Second impression of the first edition of this acclaimed study of a Tuscan merchant, who lived from from 1335 to 1410, based on extensive archival research. Dame Iris Margaret Origo, Marchesa Origo (1902-88), English born biographer, lived on a Tuscan estate with her husband from the 1920s. Her best known work was her account of life in wartime Italy, War in Val D'Orcia (1947).
