The twenty second published title in the author's The Sensual World autobiographical sequence. The author's wartime experiences in the Army, in Field Security, Combined Operations and in South and East Africa. It includes an interval on the island of Barra with Compton Mackenzie. Rupert Croft-Cooke (1903-79), born in Edenbridge, Kent, was a prolific writer both of non-fiction and of novels, publishing his detective stories under the name of Leo Bruce.
