Maria Anne Fitzherbert (1756-1837) was married to George, Prince of Wales in 1785; as she was a Roman Catholic, however, the union was invalid under the Royal Marriages Act of 1772. He was persuaded to end his relationship with her in 1795 in order for to marry Caroline of Brunswick. Part One of this book includes House of Commons debates, Mrs Fitzherbert's case in the House of Lords, a discussion of her papers and the story of the morganatic marriage of George's brother, the Duke of Sussex. Part Two contains the correspondence. The first volume of the life and correspondence was published in 1939. Sir John Randolph Shane Leslie, Bart. (1885-1971), politician, diplomat and author, was a member of an Irish landowning family. After unsuccessful attempts to enter Parliament as a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party, he concentrated on writing.
