Item Description

Large 8vo. 6.25 x 8 inches. lxix + [i] + 561 + [1] pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has sunned spine and chips at head of spine. Deckled edge, a little browned. Light wear to extremities, fly leaves browned and red ink underlining and margin notes on around a dozen pages; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by sketches in text of letters. One volume edition of 241 letters of John Keats, first published in two volumes in 1931, and here revised with additional letters. It includes a chronology, biographical note on Keat's correspondents and indexes, etc. The editor, Maurice Buxton Forman (1871-1957), drew on the work of his father, Harry Buxton Forman (1842-1917), a Keats scholar and editor, who first assembled the letters and published those to Fanny Brawne. He was later exposed as a forger over the so-called 'Reading Sonnets.' a matter in which his son was also implicated.
