Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.75 x 8.75 inches. xli + [i] + 227 pp. Bound in original cream cloth with maroon titles, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has sunned spine and edges and chips at head and tail of spine. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. A legal text book concerned with the question of order on the streets. It includes tables of statutes and cases, extensive notes and an analytical index. The author also provides a critical evaluation of the law, emphasising the increase of preventive justice in recent years and the refinement of the concept of apprehending a breach of the peace. It was published at a period which saw a big increase in the number of public demonstrations and an increase in the quantity of statute and case law on the subject. Ian Brownlie (1932-2010) was a practising barrister, who was professor of international law at LSE and then the University of Oxford.
