A companion volume to the authoritative transcription of Captain James Cook's journals of his voyages of discovery, complete with full critical apparatus, notes and appendices and illustrated by numerous maps and plates. The publication project, the greatest scholastic achievement of John Cawte Beaglehole (1901-71), of the Victoria University of Wellington, was subsidised by the New Zealand government. This set was owned by Ann Shirley (b.1927), historian of polar exploration, who held library and manuscript posts at the Scott Polar Institute, Cambridge and the National Maritime Museum, and was a member of both Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
