Notes
Francis Brett Young (1884-1954) was born in Halesowen, Worcestershire and practised as a physician until he was invalided home from the campaign in German East Africa in 1918. He then devoted himself to a career as an author, publishing his Mercian novels, loosely based on a version of his ancestral Midlands and also travelling widely, including South Africa. This wartime verse epic is a patriotic journey through England's history from Caesar's raid of 55 BC to the Battle of Britain, 1940. This first trade edition was accompanied by a signed limited edition.
