Item Description

FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION. 8vo. 5.5 x 8.25 inches. [iv] + 250 pp. Bound in original half cream cloth with blue titles over blue boards, in clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear. Extremities a little worn, but otherwise a very good copy. Novel featuring Helene who falls in love with her father's mistress, Tamara, whose 'dark exotic presence...pervades its pages.' Francoise Mallet was the pen name of the Belgian born author, Francoise Lilar (1930-2016), who was bisexual, adopted at the time of the publication of this novel (as Le rempart des beguines, 1951), because of its lesbian theme. Mallet, subsequently Mallet-Joris, later became a member of the French literary establishment.
