Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in dust wrappers, which have minor edge wear at bottom, partial browning of flyleaves and a little edge spotting, but otherwise a very good copy. A few instances of ink underlinings of text and margin comments with some neat ink notes on last free endpapers of Volume III. Decorated by publisher's devices on title pages. Unexpurgated English translation of a classic Chinese novel of manners, portraying family life in a polygamous household, told with sexual frankness and a wealth of detail. There is uncertainty about the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644) author, who apparently hailed from Lanling County in present day Shandong Province. An edition was first published in 1610 and revised in 1695. The first English edition by Frederick Clement Christie Egerton (b.1891) appeared in 1939.
