A SCIENCE FICTION CLASSIC
Macmillan & Co.,
First edition, First state. 8vo.,8 x 5.5 inches, 317 pp.
The true first issue of this book is very hard to find. The only reliable indicator is the inserted publisher's adverts at the rear, in common with many Wells titles of this time the publisher had printed a large number of copies of the sheets of the book and also had had the binding cases produced for the total print run, these were kept in warehouses and only finished into books when their was demand from the book trade for more copies. I have seen copies with the 1904 date on the title page but with inserted adverts dated as late as 1909.
To make identification more complex still, unscrupulous booksellers and collectors in the past removed the inserted adverts with later dates and discarded them, as the text block is identical as are the binding cases the only reliable identification of a true first issue is the adverts dated 20/7/04. Later bound up copies also don't have the gold top edge but I have not seen enough copies of slightly early bound copies to determine a hard rule on this point.
The story was adapted into several graphic novels and B-movies including the 1976 science fiction thriller of the same name produced and written by Bert I. Gordon.
