Vol. I lacks half title. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders enclosing panel on boards. Untrimmed edges. Slight wear to extremities, but otherwise a fine set. Binder's label of Edmonds and Remnants, London in Vol. I. Small neat bookplates of LLoyd B. Walrond. Illustrated by 76 wood engravings in text. The first issue of the 1870 first edition in two volumes. The differences between the first and second issues are quoted in Freeman, p.129. The work included the word 'evolution' (p.2) for the first time in any of Darwin's works. (Freeman 939, p. 128-132).
