The Courts of Orphans provided a legal framework to make provision for orphans and their inheritance until they reached the age of majority. They are first recorded in London in 1276 but also developed in the provinces. This study, by Charles Carlton (b.1941), professor at North Carolina State University, is based on archives held by the Corporation of London and Bristol Record Offices and the Exeter City Archives.
