Notes

John Louis de Lolme (1840-1806) studied the British constitution during a period of political exile in England from his native Geneva. The Constitution de L' Angleterre (Amsterdam,1771) was translated into English and published in 1775, the first of many subsequent editions. The author advocated a balance between monarchy, aristocracy and democracy and his work is said to have influenced the framers of the US Constitution.
