Bound in polished tree calf presentation binding; boards with decorative gilt borders enclosing gilt block of Wellington College arms on front; spine in compartments decorated gilt with contrasting green morocco title label, gilt. Green marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Minor wear to extremities, including a little damage to top of title label and adjoining spine, but otherwise a fine clean copy. Prize bookplate of 1912. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. William Cowper (1731-1800) the poet, hymn writer and anti-slavery campaigner became an evangelical Christian and was joint author of the Olney Hymns and author of the comic verse, John Gilpin. This Oxford edition of his poetry including translations, was first published in 1905 and edited, like several others in the series, by Humphrey Sumner Milford (1877-1952), who was also publisher to the Oxford University Press, 1913-45 and head of its London activities. A handsomely bound Wellington College prize copy.
