Item Description

12mo. 4 x 5 inches. [3] + 8-26 + 29-31 + 8-26 + 29-30 + 8-26, + 29-30 + [5]-30 + 8-30 + 7-31 pp. Total, 73 pp. Lacks 3 pp. but otherwise each story is complete in itself with the missing preliminary pages presumably being the discarded separate titles for each part when separately issued. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with black spine title. Extremities worn and a certain amount of browning and foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. 1858 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 28 hand coloured wood engravings, including frontispiece and five plates and by two black and white vignettes. Six illustrated children's stories entitled The Lost Child, The Shower, George Mills, The Tortoishell [sic] Kitten, Adventures of a Bible and The Shipwrecked Sailor Boy. This is a very rare title and we have been unable to trace another copy of this version. There is, however, a single copy of a variant title, Every Child's Coloured Picture Story Book, by the pseudonymous author, Grandmamma Easy. WorldCat locates this in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA. Having only seven pages it appears to be merely a fragment of one of the parts.
