The Sherrington lectureship was instituted in 1948 on the occasion of the ninetieth birthday of Sir Charles Scott Sherrington (1857-1952) who was George Holt Professor of Physiology at the University of Liverpool, 1895 to 1913. Derek Denny-Brown (1901-81) was a New Zealand born neurologist, who studied under Sherrington, and later joined the RAMC before emigrating to the USA, becoming Professor of Neurology at Harvard.
