8vo. 7 x 5.25 inches. xii + 212 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt with black titles and gilt block of butterfly on front board, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear, including chips at head, tail and edges of spine. Speckled blue edges. Minor wear to extremities and top edge a little sunned; otherwise a very good copy. Map bookplate, label and 1968 signature of Edward Carpenter (on first free endpaper). Illustrated by 127 black and white and colour plates, including frontispiece and by text figures. Pictorial endpapers. A standard identification guide to butterflies in the Warne Wayside Woodland series, a title first published in 1906. Richard South (1846-1932) was a lepidopterist and editor of The Entomologist. Hubert McDonald Edelsten (1877-1959) worked for the Ministry of Agriculture as an entomologist on wartime food crops, including the Colorado Beetle. He was an Associate in charge of British Lepidoptera at the Natural History Museum.
