FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. xiii + [i] + 241 + [1] pp. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt. A very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by frontispiece map, 70 pages of black and white photographic plates and by 92 plans and drawings in text. A well illustrated study of the buildings of Malta constructed during the period of the Knights of St. John. James Quentin Hughes (1920-2004), architect, served in Malta, 1940-42. He held academic posts at the University of Liverpool, 1961-84 and the publication of his book, Seaport (1964), helped inspire the preservation of much of the City's architectural heritage. He was also an authority on fortress and military architecture.
