[vi] + 313 + [1] pp. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has sunned spine, some foxing on rear wrapper and edge wears with some loss on lower front corner and tail of spine. Some foxing largely confined to fly leaves and edges; otherwise a very good copy. 1956 signature on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A novel set among Chinese Jews in the city of Kaifeng in the 1850s. Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) was a US novelist who spent her early life in China. Her first novel was The Good Earth (1931) and in 1938 the author won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Bondmaid was first published in the US under the title Peony in 1948.
