A novel set among Chinese Jews in the city of Kaifeng in the 1850s. Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) was a US novelist who spent her early life in China. Her first novel was The Good Earth (1931) and in 1938 the author won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Bondmaid was first published in the US under the title Peony in 1948.
