FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. [x] + 277 + [1] pp. Bound in original grey cloth, with black titles, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper. A very good copy. Bookseller's stamp on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 40 pages of plates, including, numbered in text, and by title page, other preliminaries, and scraperboard vignettes throughout text. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. An anthology from the author's books, published 1937-84 to celebrate his eightieth birthday. It is in five parts, covering his early years, travels, fishing and shooting adventures and his observations of natural history. Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (1905-90), naturalist, illustrator and children's author, was born in Northants, attended the Royal College of Art and taught at Rugby School for seventeen years from 1930. He wrote under the pseudonym 'B. B.' (a reference to the size of lead shot he favoured), but used his real name as illustrator.
