FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 6.75 inches. 95 + [1] pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has small chips at head and tail of spine. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Bookseller's label on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 13 pages of plates, including frontispiece, numbered in text and by chapter heading and tailpiece scraperboard vignettes. Account of a year in the life of a pair of badgers, observed in woods near the author's home in Northants. Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (1905-90), naturalist, illustrator and children's author, was born in Northants, attended the Royal College of Art and taught at Rugby School for seventeen years from 1930. He wrote under the pseudonym 'B. B.' (a reference to the size of lead shot he favoured), but used his real name as illustrator.
