Item Description

8vo. 6.5 x 8.75 inches. Concertina type view-book of sepia glazed lithographs, extending to c.110 inches, containing 23 different images, including panoramas of Folkestone (29 inches) and Sandgate (21 inches) sea fronts. Printed in Germany. Bound in original blue decorated boards, blocked in gilt, with brown cloth spine. Slight wear on edge of boards, otherwise a very good copy. Publisher's advertisement on rear pastedown. This type of view-book originates in Germany and was printed there. It is a late example of the curious mixture of photograph and engraving which were prolific from about 1875 to 1895, when photography finally won the day. This example must date from 1891 or after, as it shows the switchback railway and the second Leas Lift of 1890. It includes notable long panoramas of the sea fronts of Folkestone and Sandgate.
