Bound in half calf over marbled boards; spine decorated gilt with gilt bands and titles. All edges red. Top edges darkened, extremities worn and foxing largely confined to flyleaves and preliminaries; otherwise a very good set. First editions of The Betrothed and The Talisman, by Sir Walter Scott, set during the time of the Third Crusade, 1189-92, and issued together as a four volume subset of the Waverley novels, published, 1814-32. The introduction to The Betrothed is a humorous account of the formation of a joint-stock company set up to publish the Waverley novels.
