Item Description

Oblong 8vo. 7.5 x 9.75 inches. 64 pp. In green card wrapper with lighter green titles. Index on rear inside wrapper. A little wear to corners, but otherwise a very good copy. Loosely inset: Price List of :Standard' Boot and Shoe Repairing Machinery, November 1948, 12 pp.; 1950 correspondence, leaflets and price lists of shoe repairing machinery from The Spicer Machinery Co. Ltd., Bristol and John Chapman and Co., Penge, London (6 items) addressed to H. T. Avis, 25 Station Road, Ashford, Kent. Illustrated throughout by photographs and engravings, including title page vignette. Scarce trade catalogue of shoe repairing machinery manufactured by The Standard Engineering Co. Ltd. of Leicester. It is undated but refers to The Factory Act 1938 and includes a separate price list for 1948, so is likely to date from within this ten year period. The company was founded in 1894 and is still in business, but now in Kettering, Northants and still manufacturing shoe repair equipment. Its archives from 1894-1973 were deposited in the Leicestershire County Record Office in 1976. The inset correspondence suggests that the catalogue and inserts were owned by a boot and shoe repairer of Ashford in 1950.
