FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.5 x 8.75 inches. 152 pp. Bound in original grey cloth, gilt, in dust wrapper, which is chipped and torn at edges, with small missing section from tail of spine. Some browning of flyleaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Christopher Burney (1917-80), was a member of the SOE, parachuted into France in 1942. Captured by the Abwehr, he was held in solitary confinement in Fresnes prison for fifteen months, as narrated here, before his transfer to Buchenwald (told in The Dungeon Democracy, 1946). Scarce first edition, later republished by Macmillan.
