FIRST EDITION. 4to. 9.75 x 10.5 inches. [xxvi] pp. letterpress + 122 numbered plates. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt with black block of author's monogram on front board, in pictorial dust wrapper. A very good copy. Illustrated by 122 colour plates with captions. Decorated by half title, title, contents and section heading pages vignettes. Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-79) was a renowned bird artist, but also illustrated numerous other books on wildlife and rural life, including six books by Henry Williamson from Tarka the Otter (1932 edition) onwards, and later many Ladybird books. This title includes a chronology of his life. It is divided into sections on Courtship and display, The young bird, Feeding, Flying, Other behaviour and Picture making The editor, Robert Gilmor (b.1936), born and educated in reading, is an artist, illustrator and editor, designer of Collins New Naturalist dust wrappers since 1985. He was joint founder of the Society of Wildlife Artists.
