The memoirs of a colonial administrator, Sir Gawain Bell (1909-95), entered the Sudan Political Service in 1931 and later also served in Palestine, Egypt and Kuwait. During the war he took part, in an irregular force, in the Syrian campaign of 1941 and was subsequently in the Arab Legion, 1942-44.
