8vo. 7 x 9.5 inches. xi + [i] + 184 pp. Bound in original yellow cloth, gilt, with black outline block on front board, in price clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has frayed edges and chips at head and tail of spine. Board edges sunned and spotted, but otherwise a very good copy. 1970 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 8 colour plates and throughout by drawings in text, all by author. An illustrated guide to Byzantine architecture based on the author's travels in Italy, the Balkans, Constantinople, Greece and Asia Minor. Osbert Lancaster (1908-86) was an architectural historian and author, stage designer and well known as a cartoonist. He came to know Greece and its architecture after he was appointed press attach? at the British embassy in Athens in December 1944.
