FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.25 x 7.75 inches. [iv] + 207 pp.
First book edition of Red Deer, by the nature writer, Richard Jefferies(1848-1887), first serialised in It is an account of the wild red deer of Exmoor and their hunting. In spite of the praise it received on publication and good sales, the title soon went out of print. It was not until 1947 that another edition appeared and it still makes good reading today. A first edition planned for 1883 was abandoned and its title page cancelled to be replaced by this 1884 first edition. It contains the errors noted by Miller and Matthews, but the publisher's advertisements have been removed by the binder (Miller and Matthews B19.2, p.375-392).
