Notes

The military memoirs of General Sir John Miller Adye, (1819-1900). Born in Sevenoaks, he entered the Royal Artillery in 1836. These well illustrated reminiscences cover the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny and Bhutan, the Afghan Wars, the Campaign in Egypt, 1882 and his governorship of Gibraltar, 1883-86. He also served as Governor of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and as Surveyor General of the Ordnance, retiring from the army in 1886.
