Top edge gilt fore and lower edges deckled. Inset: Limited edition statement. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a fine copy. Illustrated by line drawings by Mervyn Peake, including title page vignette. An adaptation in English of the Sanskrit epic of the Ramayana of Valmiki. The Hindu deity, Sita, was carried off by Ravana and rescued by Rama. Maurice Collis (1889-1973), born in Dublin, joined the Indian Civil Service in 1911 and was transferred to Burma the following year. After returning to England in 1934 he devoted himself to writing, which included autobiographies, biographies, history, fiction and drama. The author, Mervyn Peake (1911-68) also illustrated numerous books. A handsome limited edition copy.
