FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. xx + 394 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original decorated red cloth, gilt. Patterned endpapers. A little wear to extremities and spine sunned; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece and by 521 text figures. Among the numerous puzzles described are mechanical, dissected or combination, arithmetical, word and letter, counter, matches an wire puzzles. The author, born John Lewis Angelo (1839-1919) used the pseudonym, Professor Hoffmann, because of his profession as a lawyer. His most famous book was Magic Tricks (1876), which had three successors. Hoffmann was considered to be the foremost writer on magic of his time.
