Item Description

Second Edition, Two Volumes 8vo. 8.5 x 5.25 inches., xlvii + [1] + 450 and Volume 2, Title + 371 + [1] + 95 + [98] pp. Bound in full contemporary calf rubbed on extremities and hinges cracked but strong, some foxing here and there - consistent with age. A very good example of this scarce naval and military law manual. This edition is considered preferable edition of this comprehensive treatise with a most detailed index. The author was secretary to Admiral Lord Viscount Hood and had been an officiating judge at various Naval Courts Martial during the American Civil War. In the first volume is a 'chronological list of the principal trials by Naval Court Martial under the existing laws'. The list gives date of trial, name of defendant, rank, ship, nature of charges or offences, how proved, and the sentence imposed.
