FIRST EDITION. 4to. 8.25 x 11.75 inches. xv + [i] + 725 + [3] pp. Title page, preface, index, headings, etc. in Latin, main text and notes in Greek in double columns. Bound in contemporary half vellum, gilt, over maroon boards; spine in compartments decorated gilt, with contrasting maroon morocco title label. Marbled endpapers. Some pages uncut. Ink inscription crossed through on on fourth blank free endpaper. A little wear to extremities and browning of fore edge, but otherwise a very good copy. Complete edition of the works of the Greek philosopher, Plato (c.427-348 BC) by the notable German Plato scholar, Gottfried Stallbaum (1793-1861), Professor of the University of Leipzig and Rector of the Thomasschule zu Leipzig. This handsomely bound copy was owned by F. E. Smith, later 1st Earl of Birkenhead (1872-1930), notable barrister and Conservative politician, holding high office.
