Item Description

Folio 15.75 x 12.75 inches. Coloured frontispiece and another coloured illustration printed on silk followed by 55 pages printed on vellum throughout. Each page decorated and illuminated with extraordinary decorative design. Bound in full calf, heavily gilt decorated with two inset metal panels. The binding is somewhat rubbed on extremities, and one or two scars marginally affecting the gilt decor. The spine is skilfully rebacked. The pages, being printed entirely on vellum are in immaculate condition. An extraordinary Art Nouveau inspired production with amazing decorative borders surrounding each page of text that contain a wealth of hidden detail: elves, unicorns, griffins, peacocks and all sort of fantastical and imaginative designs. This production was issued in several different formats, this being the most exclusive deluxe version. There was a further edition issued on Japan paper, and an ordinary trade edition without the elaborate binding printed on normal paper. This ambitious project by art critic, artist and journalist Harry Quilter would be his only illustrated book. He was admitted to the Bar in 1878, though his legal career would be marred by poor health. His artistic pursuits would see him recognised as a critic at The Times and The Spectator, and he published books on art and literature.
