8vo. 5.75 x 8.75 inches. 186 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, with gilt block on front board, in clipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has darkened spine with chips at head and tail. Spine and edges sunned and top right hand corner on first free endpaper clipped, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 30 colour plates, including frontispiece, by the author, paginated in text and by drawings in text. Pictorial endpapers. During the war the author served in the British army in southern Iran. While stationed in the vicinity of Kermanshah, and afterwards of Qum, he began a series of colour drawings of what he observed on his travels and supplemented them with a commentary on the crowds, the beggars, the cafes, the food and the bazaars that he observed in every town and village. Cecil Keeling (1912-76), artist, studied at the Putney and then Chelsea Schools of Art while working for a printing firm. He joined the BBC as a designer in 1937, and returned to it after his wartime service.
