Item Description
THREE VOLUMES. FIRST EDITION. 12mo. 4.75 x 7.5 inches. Vol. I, iv + 339 pp.; Vol. II, [ii] + 316 pp.; Vol. III, [ii] + 366 pp. + [2] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original half morocco over marbled boards; spine in compartments with gilt bands with contrasting maroon morocco title labels, gilt. Extremities worn and some scattered foxing throughout; otherwise a very good set. Signatures at head of titles. First edition of the second novel title, a society tale, published by Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803-73), who was an English politician, MP and best-selling novelist. Although second only to Dickens in popularity in his time, Lytton's extravagant style and moralising led to his later loss of favour as a novel writer.
