FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8 x 6 inches. ix + [vii] + 487 pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, with pictorial block on front board and small blocks on spine. Top edge gilt. Extremities a little worn, fly leaves browned, but otherwise a very good clean. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 86 text figures, including 80 black and white photographs. A systematic study of the the art and theory of magic by Nevil Maskelyne (1863-1924), son of stage magician, John Nevil Maskelyne (1839-1917) and the practice of magic by David Devant (1868-1941), with the tricks illustrated by photographs. Devant was a member of the Maskelyne company and perhaps the most accomplished magical performer and illusionist on the British stage around the turn of the twentieth century. He was also an early cinema pioneer.
