Minimal biographical information about Verrall King is available. While it is known that he studied art in London and produced etchings of locations in England, France, Spain and Italy, he does not seem to have belonged to a major art association. Interestingly, his etchings were frequently limited to editions of only 75 copies each, and therefore we surmise that no more than that number would have been produced of this image. His style is distinctly atmospheric and complex and his work is regarded as being of superior quality to an amateur or 'tourist' artist.
This view depicts the street running behind the fish market on the Stade at Folkestone Harbour, looking West with a low railway arch at the end of the cobbled street. The Shangri-La is feint in the background. The building on the right of the image in the foreground is the Smokehouse today.
