8vo. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. 59 pp. Bound in green cloth, gilt. Marbled endpapers. Minor wear to extremities, a little fore edge spotting with slight traces inside, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Inscribed by Wavell on title page, Private For R. G Wilson Xmas 1947. Illustrated by The World Calendar (A reform of the Gregorian Calendar first proposed 1930) and by tables. A collection of quotations, including poetry, notes from books and extracts from articles, with a separate section of military notes (which includes an extract from Wavell himself). General, later Field Marshall, Wavell (1883-1950) served as Commander-in Chief, Middle East Command, 1939-41, (overseeing the defeat of the Italian army in the Western Desert, 1940), C-in C India 1941-43 and as the penultimate Viceroy of India, 1943-46. Wavell was a great lover of literature and had already published a poetry collection, Other Men's Flowers, when Viceroy in 1944. Notes and Ideas is a privately published commonplace book taking its quotations from a wide range of sources. It was apparently printed on the vice-regal press in Delhi and limited to no more than thirty copies This copy has been presented and inscribed by the author as a Christmas gift in 1947. A very scarce title; we have been unable to trace any examples of this original in libraries or for sale.
