FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 7 x 5 inches. xxiii + [i] + 247 + [1] pp. Bound in plain red cloth, gilt. Extremities a little worn and spine and edges slightly darkened. Occasional scattered foxing in margins and one small stain, p.71 and on margins of plate 32; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on recto of frontispiece. Illustrated by 123 photo-lithographic plates, including frontispiece and by 192 text figures. Extensively illustrated first edition of what became a popular text book on the use of motifs derived from nature in artistic ornament. Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910) was a decorative artist who became prominent in the Arts and Crafts movement.
