It describes the development of government and the present state of administration, law, revenue and finance, with some reference to Indian social life and customs. Sir George Campbell (1824-92) was a Scottish colonial administrator, who was Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, 1870-74, and later became an MP. The first edition was published 1852.
